Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña he’s trying to build some buzz for the upcoming DC film by teasing some familiar faces who will make cameos.
During an interview with The Wrap, the actor said, “I think if you’re a DC fan, there’s going to be more than one character you recognize. I can tell you that.”
It obviously won’t spoil who will appear in the film, but this is the first time we’ve heard that other DC characters will appear in the film. It’s also unclear if these characters have been featured in other DC films like Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman or if there will be new recognizable DC characters. It will be interesting to see.
James Gunn has confirmed that Blue Beetle is the first DCU character to be introduced under DC Studios, while the first DCU film remains Superman: Legacy. Could these cameos be characters that could appear in future DC films?
Director Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) has planned a trilogy of Blue Beetle movies, but to make those other movies, this sequel has to be a hit for the studio. Not sure if that will happen as I definitely see a lack of enthusiasm for it. But who knows! Everything is possible!
The film’s story centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of the Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a beetle grafted onto his spine that gives him enormous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. You can see the transformation happen in the trailer, and it’s like family-friendly body horror. Here is the synopsis:
Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite the way he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.
The Blue Beetle movie is directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is also the protagonist Bruna Marchezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
The film will only be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
