Many fans were thrilled to hear that Warner Bros. was officially moving forward with a 2005 sequel Keanu Reeves DC film Constantine. Not long after James Gunn and Peter Safran joined DC Studios as co-CEOs and then suddenly Reeves questioned the project.
When previously asked about the status of the project, the actor said, “I was hoping it would, but we don’t know. Yes, we are trying. He later went on to say, “I think they’re trying to figure out what to do with it. I hope I can reprise the role of John Constantine, but that remains to be seen. Yes. But I hope so. I hope SO.”
It doesn’t make it sound like it’s a sure thing. But now we have an update from Constantine 2 screenwriter Akiva Goldman who offered a promising update on the project saying it’s still in progress and that he cut the story short because of it, but isn’t currently working on it due to the writer’s strike. He said:
“My pens are down, so there’s nothing we can do. But, yeah, those are the next things I’m going to write when I’m allowed to write again, and I had already started'[I Am] Legend 2′ when we [started striking]and Francis [Lawrence]Keanu [Reeves], and stopped “Constantine 2″. I just haven’t started writing yet.”
While Goldsman isn’t currently writing the script, it’s nice to know that he knows what the story will be and will start working on it when the strike is finally over.
Reeves shared his excitement about the project, and it’s something he’s been trying to accomplish for years. He previously said, “I don’t know if it was an unfinished business, but it was definitely a role that I loved. And I thought Francis Lawrence, the director, did such an amazing job. I loved playing that character and really enjoyed the movie I was like, [in a Oliver Twist voice] “Can I have some more?” I kept asking almost every year. I’d be like, ‘Can I please?’ and they said, ‘No, no!'”
But then one day he finally got the go! Reeves said: ‘So it’s exciting. It’s almost like an outdoor playground where we can hopefully cook something up and play games, and I guess we get off the playground and make a meal. But I’m looking forward to, and I hope, it can happen. You don’t know how these things go. But I will definitely do my best to try and make that dream come true.
It will be a while before this movie gets made, but it’s nice to know that we will see it someday.
