Greta Gervig (Barbie, Little Woman, Lady Bird) undertook to write and direct two films based on CS Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. He was previously in talks to direct two multiple Narnia films several months ago, and I imagine if he enjoys directing these first two films, he might direct more. But committing to two of them is a big job!
Gerwig herself confirmed the news in a recent interview with The New Yorker with the report saying, “There are more adaptations in her future – she has a deal with Netflix to write and direct at least two films based on the CS Lewis film.” The Chronicles of Narnia – but he wasn’t likely to make another movie about a toy.
Gerwig went on to talk about what it would take to direct another toy adaptation, saying, “It would have to be something that has a weird hook in me, that feels like it’s going to the core.”
Netflix has announced its plan to adapt them Narnia fantasy novels in 2018, saying, “Under the terms of a multi-year agreement between Netflix and The CS Lewis Company, Netflix will develop classic stories from the Narnia universe into series and feature films for its members worldwide. All series and films produced through the deal will be Netflix productions, with Entertainment One’s (eOne) Mark Gordon alongside Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber as executive producers for the series and as producers for the feature films. In total the Narnia books have sold more than 100 million copies and have been translated into more than 47 languages worldwide. The deal marks the first time that the rights to all seven books in the Narnia universe have been held by the same company.
Gerwig is a talented director and storyteller and I have enjoyed the films she has made throughout her career. I especially enjoyed her adaptation of Little Women and can’t wait for Barbie. I think it’s a solid choice to adapt these epic Narnia fantasy stories. Can’t wait to see what she does with it.
Gerwig’s next film is Barbiewhich will hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
