Christopher Nolan compares the end of OPPENHEIMER to INCEPTION

Christopher Nolan he recently sat down with Wired to talk about his highly anticipated film Oppenheimer about the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. During his conversation, the director compared Oppenheimer’s ending to his 2010 film Inception, saying:

“I mean, the ending of Inception, it’s exactly that. There’s a nihilistic take on that ending, right? But he’s also moved on and he’s with his kids. The ambiguity isn’t emotional ambiguity. It’s intellectual. for the audience. It’s fun, I think there’s an interesting relationship between Inception and Oppenheimer’s endings to explore. Oppenheimer has a complicated ending. Complicated feelings.”

As you know, Inception ends in a way that does not clarify if Leonardo DicaprioCobb’s character has returned to real life, or is still trapped in a dream world. I loved that ending, and now I’m excited to see how Nolan will bring Oppenheimer to the end.

Nolan has previously talked about some of the first reactions from people who have seen the film and it will be an intense experience for audiences. It’s even been described as a horror film, which Nolan agrees with:

“It’s an intense experience, because it’s an intense story. I recently showed it to a director who said it’s kind of a horror film. I don’t disagree. It’s a complicated set of feelings to be entertained by awful things , you know This is where the horror dimension comes into play.

Nolan also shared some other early audience reactions, including the movie that left people absolutely devastated. He said:

“Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated. They can’t talk. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the story and the foundation. But the love for the characters, the love for the relationships, is just as strong.” like I’ve never done before”.

The film is described as “the heart-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world to save it.” The film is the protagonist Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II. He is joined by Emilia Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, e Robert Downey Jr. such as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the United States Atomic Energy Commission.

The film is also the protagonist Florence Pug as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber, Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence, along with Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dan DeHaan, DylanArnold, David Krumholtz, Alden EhrenreichAND Matthew Modino.

The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large format film photography that includes, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analog photography.

Oppenheimer will be released in theaters on July 21, 2023.
