Damn… this is going to be another tough year for Comic-Con International. A roster of major Hollywood studios are bailing out the event this year. We’ve previously reported that Marvel Studios won’t show up, but now we’ve learned that Netflix, Sony, HBO, and Universal won’t show up.
It looks like it will be a major blow to the largest annual fan convention in North America. The event came roaring into last year after two years of closure due to the COVID pandemic. But with all this studio salvage, Hall H is going to look pretty bare.
Things we won’t see at Comic-Con this year include upcoming projects like The Marvels, Loki Season 2, Ahsoka, Haunted Mansion, True Detective Season 4, House of the Dragon Season 2, Gran Turismo, Kraven the Hunter, Last Voyage of the Demeter, Strays, The ExorcistAND A piecejust to name a few.
You know what, though? It’s not all doom and gloom. I’m actually looking forward to a light and stress-free year at Comic-Con this year! Don’t spend the night in line for the big panels! I may be on some of the other smaller panels that I never get to because I’m always trapped in Hall H covering the big stuff, but this year…not a lot of the big stuff! So while many studios don’t show up, my time will be free to do other things, and I’m thrilled about it!
So why are all the studios bailing out? There’s the writers’ strike going on and then the actor might go on strike at the end of the month. It is explained by Variety: “If SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP can’t come to terms by the June 30 contract deadline and the guild goes on strike, the actors will almost certainly join the writers and showrunners in skipping promotional events like the Comic -Con, leaving the studios with hardly anyone to populate the panels in front of thousands of waiting fans.
As far as Warner Bros. is concerned, they are in a waiting pattern. If they show up, they’ll show off Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrimand a few other things.
Paramount Pictures is expected to hold a panel for the animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Chaosbut Paramount+ has yet to engage with panels for its own Star Trek exhibitions and other projects.
Amazon Studios is said to be there and will have panels for The wheel of time season 2, The Boys: Gen VAND The boys Season 4.
Comic-Con spokesperson David Glanzer he said in a statement, “Regarding the strike and its possible effects on Comic-Con, we tend to refrain from speculation or forecasting. I will say, our hope is for a speedy resolution that will be beneficial to all parties and allow everyone to continue the work they love. Until then, we will continue to diligently work on our summer event in hopes of making it as fun, educational and celebratory as it has been in years past.”
What are your thoughts that all these studies have saved this year?
