Blue Beetle Joins James Gunn’s DCU! This was confirmed by the director and he revealed exciting details about the character’s future. After The Flash’s box office flop, all eyes are on the next chapter of the DCU in cinemas, as it has the task of winning back the audience. Although Superman: Legacy was supposed to be the opening film of this new phase, surprisingly, Blue Beetle will be in charge of taking the first step.
Recently, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto gave an interview to Total Film magazine where he was asked where this film would fit into the DCU narrative, not in terms of chronology, but continuity. While Blue Beetle will be released before Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomthe plans for the character fit perfectly with the vision of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that were brewing for future DCU installments. But we are not tied to all the films of the past. Yes, our film exists in a world where superheroes are real, but that doesn’t mean past events dictate the course of our story.”
If the director’s words are true, it is surprising that at this point the inclusion of Blue Beetle in the new DCU. Less than two months after its premiere, there has been little talk about the impact this film will have on the future of the franchise. It is also interesting that a relatively unknown character is in charge of unofficially starting this new phase so important for DC and Warner Bros. Discovery.

When does ‘Blue Beetle’ debut in Mexico?
Also, Soto confirmed it there are ample plans for Blue Beetlebut his future in the DCU will depend on public support.
From the beginning, our intention was to make at least two more films after the first one. Following the traditional structure of a three-act story, we wanted our film to be basically the first act of a saga,” added the director.
According to rumors, The budget of Blue Beetle would be around 120 million dollars. If that’s confirmed, a gross of nearly $300 million could be enough to warrant a sequel. However, considering that not even Flash, Batman in his various versions or Supergirl have managed to secure those figures, the future does not look very promising.
The premiere of Blue Beetle in Mexican theaters is scheduled for August 17, 2023. Will we finally see the trilogy that its creators expect? Time will tell if Blue Beetle can position himself as a key pillar in the new DCU and if audiences will give him the support he needs to keep his story expanding in future installments.
