MGM+ has announced that they are developing a true crime docuseries based on serial killer Ed Gein. Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein will follow the life and crimes of the murderer and grave robber who was the inspiration for several horror movie villains, including Buffalo Bill from The silence of the lambsNorman Bates from Psychopathand Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

“For years, filmmakers, journalists and scholars have sought to unravel the mind of this notorious killer, and with new revelations and never-before-heard recordings, viewers will be transported to late 1950s Central America and immersed in the twisted mind of Gein. The series explores Gein’s upbringing and twisted relationship with his mother (which famously inspired Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho), his first grave robbing, the murders that led to his arrest, and the police discovery of his terrifying house of horrors, all accompanied by the brand-new revelations revealed in the recordings.

Michael Wright, head of MGM+ said of the document:

“This gripping and haunting docuseries sheds light on a notorious chapter in our true-crime story. Psycho not only takes an in-depth look at the life of one of the most notorious serial killers of our time, but also explores the impact his crimes have had on both his victims and our culture.

James’s Friend Day (Blumhouse’s compendium of horror, Fall River) directs and produces. It sounds like a chilling tale of the terrifying killer known as ‘The Plainfield Ghoul’ and ‘The Mad Butcher’.

Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein arrives on MGM+ this September, just in time for the spooky season. Will you check?
