Arnold SchwarzeneggerThe 1993 movie Ultimate action hero it was a pretty fun movie to watch, but it was a big box office bomb. Schwarzenegger was at the top of his game with this movie, but for some reason, there just wasn’t an audience for it. Over the years the movie has actually gained more respect and the actor previously shared that this is one of the most underrated movie roles of him.
As you can imagine, Schwarzenegger didn’t expect the film’s lackluster reception, and when the film ended up failing at the box office, he felt hurt and embarrassed. It was such a difficult time for him that he didn’t want to see anyone for a week. In the recently released Netflix docuseries Arnoldthe actor said:
“I can’t tell you how angry I was. She hurts you. He hurts your feelings. It’s embarrassing… I didn’t want to see anyone for a week. But you keep on trudging. And my mother-in-law always said it too: “Let’s move on.” It’s a great message.”
Schwarzenegger also went on to say, “When Ultimate action hero came out I had reached my peak after Terminator 2with the most successful film of the year worldwide.
Terminator director James Cameron spoke about his first conversation with Schwarzenegger after Ultimate action hero opened in theaters, saying:
“It sounded like she was in bed crying. She took it as a blow to his brand. I think she really rocked him… I said, ‘What are you going to do?’ She said, ‘I’m walking around by myself.'” Cameron added, “That’s the only time I’ve ever heard him down.”
Yes, I think many of us may feel hurt and embarrassed in some way when it comes to trying and failing at something. I know I have! But, at the same time, this is Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he was always going to be fine. When regular people with no money try and fail at something, it hurts more.
Ultimate action hero was directed by John McTiananand told the story of a young movie fan named Danny Madigan (Austin O’Brien) who is magically transported to the fictional world of his favorite action hero, Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger). As Danny navigates this fantasy world, he and Jack must work together to defeat the diabolical villain Benedict (Charles Dance) and prevent him from using a magic ticket to enter the real world.
