The best way to plan for a failed franchise is to not plan at all. That’s exactly what Transformers AND GI Joe franchised manufacturer Lawrence of Bonaventure he’s admitting when it comes to a possible crossover. That’s always been my big concern with these franchises, that Paramount Pictures doesn’t have a real plan for anything. They are just putting things together without any real thought or plan. If you haven’t seen Transformers: Rise of the BeastsI’m entering spoiler territory.

At the end of the film, Noah (Antonio Ramos) is offered a job for GI Joe by Agent Burke (Michael Kelly). This creates a franchise crossover, which is something that has happened before in the comics. It’s also something fans wanted to see; it could actually be really cool! The thing is, it has to be done right! It has to be meticulously planned to make it happen just right. But that’s not what’s happening here.

During a recent interview with Variety, Di Bonaventura said: “Fans want many things; if we do this and we don’t understand it well, they will be disappointed. It took a while to understand the Maximals, and now we have the suggestion of how to start the story of the Joes.

He went on to say that they didn’t get it, “We don’t plan ahead so much. We react to what the audience reacts to, so in a way we can please them, but also in a way it makes it feel fresh. We expect them to it will be a little loyalty and that they will go on some kind of mission together”.

Ugh. It is not so. How long has this guy been making movies and he still doesn’t know how to make them properly? This is so frustrating! As you know, Marvel plans its movies years in advance, they have a plan in place, but they also leave that plan open for necessary adjustments. It’s okay to come up with a grand plan!

Director Steven Caple Jr. continued to tease that the future of Transformers and G.I. Joe could take Joe darker and even head into space. He said, “There are sections of the Joes that haven’t been used and characters that have never been touched, and I’m thrilled with that. I’ll say this about what comes next: We’ve spent a lot of time on Earth and I’m curious as to what else it’s out there.”

That’s great, I’m fine with playing darker GI Joe characters, but you still need a plan! They should have started from scratch on both franchises and made a few GI Joe movies and a few Transformers movies that all lead to a crossover. But right now they’re just putting shit together and seeing what sticks. That’s not how you make great movies.

It’s a shame Paramount Pictures isn’t interested in doing big things Transformers AND GI Joe movies and who are settling for mediocrity.
