Gene Simmons shares the inspirational letter Stan Lee sent him when he was 13

Iconic rockstar Gene Simmons of the band KISS is a huge fan of comics and, like many of us, was a fan of Marvel comics when he was growing up. His love of comics was a major inspiration for the “Demon” character in the band. He has also created a couple of his own comics with him Gene Simmons’ house of horrors and his new comicDominatrix.

During a recent interview with CB, Simmons mentioned that he was also trying to get a job at Marvel Comics and reached out to the New York City editorial office often in hopes of getting a writing job. He was just a young teenager at the time, and as you can imagine, his calls usually went unanswered.

However, one day Simmons received a personal letter from the Marvel legend Stan Lee. He spoke about that letter and shared what was written in it saying:

“What an amazing person [Stan Lee] era. I had known him for decades and decades, but at 13 I was torturing Flo Steinberg, his assistant at 645 Madison Avenue. Out of nowhere, I actually got a postcard from Stan himself and it said, in his handwriting, ‘Gene, you’re destined to do great things. Excelsior, Stan.’”

He went on to talk about what was going through his mind when he received the latter saying:

“And to me, as a 13-year-old little shmuck in Queens, New York, this was a sign from the gods that he really existed instead of just in fan pages. That he would say something nice to me, when I had nothing on the my resume, inspired is a sweet word for it.”

The rest is history, Simmons went on to do great things! It’s pretty amazing to see what he’s accomplished in his life.
