Hobie Brown aka Spider-Punk was a huge hit with fans Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. He was such a fun, energetic, vibrant character. The character was perfectly voiced by Daniel Kaluyathat he got to use his real voice and accent in the film.

One of the fun things this movie played with regarding Spider-Punk was his relationship with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld). Something was going on that was really bugging Mile Morales (Shameik Moore)! There was obviously some sort of connection between Hobie and Gwen, and in a recent interview with Kaluuya, he shared his thoughts on what that connection is. He told The Hollywood Reporter:

“Gwen and Hobie, I think something was up. She left a lot of things at her house. They are in this band and one of the reasons Hobie was there was to have Gwen’s back. He wouldn’t go around with the [Spider Society] otherwise, but he felt Gwen wasn’t well. So I don’t think Gwen used Hobie for that. I think they have a genuine friendship, but how deep is that between Gwen and Hobie.

Kaluuya then went on to talk about how Hobie would ultimately have Miles’ back over the course of the film and how the character was able to identify with him:

“She saw Miles doing what’s right no matter what, especially in this one [Mumbattan] sequence. Hobie saw that he was pissing people off and he liked it. Even Miles didn’t back down. He didn’t apologize for doing what he did. He was like, ‘No, I want to do this. I will continue to do so.’ So Hobie saw that rebellious spirit and identified with him and wanted to support and help him. She looked at him and thought, ‘This guy is fine,’ after probably hearing certain things about him. So Hobie knew Miles would unravel the system or status quo within the Spider Society.

I really liked how Spider-Punk’s arc played out, and he was just such a great character. As someone growing up a lot in punk culture, it was amazing to see this character come to life like this. I also loved the way he was visually portrayed! Such a unique way to handle the character, and it worked perfectly!

I hope we haven’t seen the last of Spider-Punk, this is a character that needs to see some more action! I would really like to see a Spider-Verse movie that puts the spotlight on him alone! Would be great.
