Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse it was such an incredibly fun film filled with so many great surprises and while this is an animated film, there were some live-action elements included. There were a lot more live-action scenes that were originally planned for the film but ended up being cut. The film’s directors recently spoke about the sequel, offering some insight into why they cut these moments from the script.
Justin K Thompson told Variety, “We had even bigger ambitions” and his co-director Kemp Powers he explained why the scene didn’t make it into the film: ‘There were times when we had huge live-action sequences in the film, and it turned into a bad joke. We didn’t like it anymore either. And we just said, ‘ OK, that’s enough, let’s make sure it’s something precise that gets the most value for money and speaks to the story'”.
The directors didn’t provide any details on what these live-action sequences would entail, but they were all storyboarded and the animatics were created specifically for them. It is explained that the directors used cropped versions of the live-action characters with other crew members reading their lines. Powers said, “They looked like a South Park character,” and Thompson added, “We should do it as a character.”
If you have seen Through the Spider-Verse, you know which live-action sequences were included. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you. But I’d like to know what these huge live-action scenes would have been! Maybe one day we will find out.
