HBO cancels PERRY MASON series after two seasons

HBO canceled his Perry Massone series after only two seasons. The cable network has decided not to renew the series, which is a shame. I enjoyed the show! It was a really well done series with a solid and interesting storytelling.

The series starred Matthew Rhys in the title role, and was produced by Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. AND Susan Downey.

HBO said in a statement, “We are extremely grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Massone for their reimagining of such a treasured and legendary franchise. While we won’t be moving forward with another season of the series, we are thrilled to continue working with the brilliant creatives at Team Downey on future projects.”

Downey Jr. had previously addressed the prospect of a third season following the end of season two, saying, “I mean, wouldn’t that be nice? I think Matthew and all the other people who populate it in front of the screen, all our people behind the scenes, have built this incredible world that I know we could continue to tell really interesting stories about. We’d be lying if we didn’t say that we’ve certainly talked a lot with Michael about a third season, but our fate rests in the hands of others.”

Unfortunately, audiences weren’t to the liking of HBO, so they’re moving forward without it. HBO’s head of drama Frances Bears he previously said: “Every show has a job to do, given the price we put on it, and there is an audience. component, and there’s an element of critical response to it, and of course the buzzy nature of a show. They are those elements that we always keep in mind and discuss whether or not a show will continue. That affects Perry Mason, for Winning Time, for example, for Gilded Age, so we have to interpret everything and see how well they do.

In Season 1, “As the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking pictures! Evangelical fervor! And a kidnapping of a child gone very, very wrong! Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this limited series follows the origins of American Fiction’s most legendary defense attorney, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade kicks in his door, Mason’s relentless search for the truth reveals a fractured city and, perhaps, a path to redemption for himself.

Season 2 “picks up months after the end of the Dodson trial. Perry has moved on from the farm, ditched the milk truck, even traded his leather jacket for an ironed suit. It’s the worst year of the Depression, and Perry and Della have set the company on a safer path by pursuing civil cases instead of the tumultuous work that criminal cases involve. Unfortunately, there isn’t much work for Paul in wills and contracts, so he’s gone off on his own. An open and closed case sweeps through the city of Los Angeles, and Perry’s quest for justice reveals that all is not always as it seems.

In the second season, set in the worst year of the Depression, Perry (Rhys) and Della (Juliet Rylance) pursuing civil cases instead of the tumultuous work that criminal law entails. An open and closed case crashes into the city of Los Angeles, and Perry’s quest for justice reveals that all is not always as it seems. The season 2 finale ended on a cliffhanger, with Perry in prison.

Ori said, “We are really proud of Perry Massone and I have loved working with Team Downey and Michael Begler on this season of the show. I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished for season two.

Perry Massone was developed by writers and co-showrunners Jack Amiel AND Michael Begler. He earned four Emmy nominations, including Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Rhys.
