New details on Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR

With Wes Andersonit’s a funny looking movie City of Asteroids due out next week, the director is already working on his next project, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The film is set on Netflix and is the second Roald Dahl adaptation Anderson has worked on.

Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Friend RupertAND Richard Ayade they are all ready to star in the film. The original book consisted of several short stories and this film will adapt four of them. Now we have some small details to share about the film thanks to Friend. In a recent interview with Variety, he said:

“That might change, but when we made it, there were four stories from one Roald Dahl [short story collection], which are the slightly darker and more twisted ones he wrote for adults. Wes took four and put together a small crew of actors: myself, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel and Richard Ayoade. We each act in about two of the stories and switch roles. I think Ralph could be in all of them. My two are ‘The Ratcatcher’ and ‘The Swan’. I grew up completely obsessed with Dahl. I actually had his obituary on my bedroom door. I was so saddened when he died [in 1990]. This movie was a dream come true.”

Looks like it will be interesting! Having the same actors play different characters is new for Anderson. As for the two stories mentioned by Friend, here’s some info on them for those unfamiliar with them.

“The Ratcatcher” tells the “sinister story about the darker side of human nature. Well, a rat catcher has a very unusual way of dealing with these parasites…”

“The Swan” follows two boys, “Ernie and his friend Raymond, who like to bully Peter Watson. When Ernie receives a shotgun for his fifteenth birthday, they both decide to go to the rabbit patch, shooting birds along the way. There they argue with Peter and something completely unexpected happens.

The brief description for the entire book reads: “Meet the boy who can talk to animals and the man who can see with his eyes closed. And discover the treasure buried underground. A clever mix of fact and fiction, this collection also covers how master storyteller Roald Dahl came to be a writer. With Roald Dahl, you can never be sure where reality ends and fantasy begins.

Netflix acquired Roald Dahl’s entire catalog of stories last year, and they’re looking to bring those stories to life as movies, shows, live-action, animation, immersive experiences, games, and more. Some of the other projects currently under development include Taika Waititi AND Phil Johnstonseries based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and an adaptation of Matilda The Musical.
