Mark Hammill he will go down in history as one of the best versions of The Joker that was brought to life in a Batman project. His Joker from Batman: The Animated Series it’s iconic, but Hamill explains his casting would never have happened without it Michael Keatonis casting for the role of Batman Tim BurtonThe 1989 movie.
Hamill recalled during a recent Wired video interview, that due to the backlash against casting Keaton as Bruce Wayne aka Batman, he was given a confidence boost when he auditioned for the role. He said:
“I just read for it. I had a confidence that really helped because there was this huge outcry that Michael Keaton was going to be playing Batman. “Oh, he’s Mr. Mama, he’s a comedian.” I mean, they hadn’t even seen it [in the role] and they didn’t realize how big it was going to get. But there have been great controversies.
Keaton had to endure a lot of hate from fans at the time, but luckily for him, social media wasn’t a thing! Had this happened in today’s world, the hate would have been amplified so much more! But watching Keaton overcome that villainy to become the incredible fan-favorite Batman gave Hamill the confidence he needed that fans would be willing to accept that Luke Skywalker could play the Joker. He said:
“When I entered [for the Joker role]I thought, ‘Do you think they’re going to hire Luke Skywalker to play the Joker? Fans will lose their minds!’ I was so sure I couldn’t be chosen. I was completely relaxed. Many times there’s performance anxiety because you want the part, here I knew I couldn’t get the part, so, who cares? I pulled out of the parking lot thinking, “This is the best Joker they’ve ever heard, and it’s a shame they can’t pick me.” And as soon as they threw me, it reversed. I was like, ‘Oh no, I can’t do this!’”
Hamill went on to say that the Joker is one of his favorite characters to play and explained why he said that “because he’s crazy, and because he’s crazy, he’s never boring. It’s just fun to play a character who wreaks havoc wherever he goes.”
Now Hamill’s Joker is legendary.
