8BitDo makes some really cool stuff for retro gamers. They have various modern controllers for retro consoles/emulators, but they also have mod kits that allow you to take your original controllers and modernize them a bit. I really wanted to try one of these mod kits for the SNES controller, and now they have one for the Nintendo 64 controller.
These mod kits are designed in a way that you simply take apart the original controller, remove the PCB, insert the new PCB (no soldering skills required) and reassemble the controller. What does it give you? It makes the controller wireless over Bluetooth with a rechargeable battery, so now you can use it on your Nintendo Switch, Android device, and potentially more. The best part is that the most expensive mod kit bundle for the N64 controller costs just $40 plus shipping, making it cheaper than Nintendo’s official wireless N64 controller for the Nintendo Switch, which normally costs around $60. more expensive package includes the Mod Kit, a Hall Effect joystick, and a Rumble Pack that has a built-in rechargeable battery and a USB-C port for recharging it and the controller.
Unfortunately, the mod kit is currently out of stock, but know I’ll be checking back periodically to see when new stock becomes available. If you want to plug the controller into your N64, you’ll need an adapter like the one from RetroTime. Honestly, I don’t know if I want the Hall effect joystick, but what do you think > Will you be upgrading your controllers?
