Disney took over Thomas Kaill to direct the upcoming live-action remake of the 2016 animated film Vaiana. Kail is the Tony Award-winning director of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton.
Dwayne Johnson announced the pointless remake a couple of months ago, and he’s set to reprise his role as Maui, the demigod of wind and sea. The film will celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pioneer her own path.
The story is inspired by Polynesian myths, Moana told the story of a young woman who disobeys her father, the leader of an island who is facing impending ecological disaster and sets out on a quest to reunite a mystical relic with its owner, a goddess called Te Fiti. Along the way, she frees Maui from her island prison, she is captured by a monstrous crab, and finds the strength to become the boss her father believed he could be.
The screenwriter of the original film Jared Bushalso wrote the remake, along with Dana Ledoux Miller. Auli’i Cravalhowho voiced Moana in the original film, will executive produce with Scott Sheldon, Dan GarciaAND Hiram Garcia.
When the film was announced, Johnson said, “I am deeply humbled and overwhelmed with gratitude to bring Moana’s beautiful story to the big live-action screen. This story is my culture and this story is emblematic of the grace and warrior strength of our people. I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite on Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is very profound to me.”
He continued, “I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor, because there is no better world for us to honor our people’s history, our passion and our purpose than across the realm of music and dance, which is at the heart of who we are as a Polynesian people.”
