Remember that scene in the original 1993 Super Mario Bros. film it presents Dennis Hopper’s King Koopa e Fiona ShawIs Koopa Queen Lena in a mud bath? While relaxing in the mud, Hopper says, “You know what I love about mud? It’s clean and dirty at the same time.”
Well, one thing I didn’t know about this scene is that the mud bath was also filled with $3,000 worth of worms! The funny thing is, you can’t even tell there are worms in it!
When discussing the scene in an interview with LA Times, Shaw, whose credits include My left foot AND Andor, he said: “The first script I got was witty, maybe 10 scripts ago. Now they’re talking about taking a worm bath.
As you know, the script rewrites during the production of the film were a nightmare for the actors. It was out of control and that original witty script was non-existent during the filming of the film. It was explained that the managers Rocky Morton AND Annabel Jankel, he improvised the story “as they inched forward, entering week eight of a 12-week shoot that ended up being three weeks longer. At least nine writers worked on the script, which has now grown as dense as the nearby Wilmington phone book, rainbow-colored with rewritten pages. The only missing page color is the one from the original draft. There are no blank pages left.
When discussing the wormbath, it is explained “that Shaw’s bravery inspired the directors to add the wormbath. During a scene at the Boom Boom bar, Shaw was ordered to sip from a shot glass containing a worm. Assuming the worm was fake, he’d done as he’d instructed, only to find it wriggling from his lips. Shaw had maintained his professional composure until after the shoot. The directors loved it so much they asked her to remake it. He had done so reluctantly. . . and she did it again. . . It is again. . . .”
Sounds like this movie was a terrible production to work on! The directors were everywhere, and well… they never directed another feature film again.
