When I first saw the Hoverboard footage in Back to the Future Part II when I was a child, like all children… I wanted one! That was the coolest damn thing! A damn Hoverboard! Oh! She drove me crazy!
Now, as a kid, I knew there were things in movies that were fake because I used to go to Universal Studios often, but I remember the talk on the playground at school and with kids saying they’ve seen one for real once, and also the Lucky that he said he owned one, but never showed it because his parents wouldn’t let him.
It didn’t help that the film’s director, Robert Zemeckis himself, claimed in a behind-the-scenes promo that the Hoverboard was real! In fact, he said they had been around for years, but claimed it was because of “parent groups” that were never released and sold because they were too dangerous. But as he says in the video, “We got our hands on some of them and put them in the movie.”
Yes, it was a playful hoax that ended up breaking many children’s hearts when they found out they weren’t real. It was a real shame.
There have now been attempts to make a real Hoverboard, but nothing has ever really taken off in a commercial market. It was just for fun to see if it could actually be done. Tony Hawk rode one once! Either way, you can watch the promo video below where Zemeckis claims Hoverboards are real.
