Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first trailer for its musical film adaptation of The Color Purple. The film tells the story of the “extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share an unbreakable bond”.
The film is based on a 1982 novel by Alice Walker and the musical stage play. The story centers on Celie, a Southern black woman in the early 20th century who is abused by her father and husband.
Steven Spielberg he directed the original film adaptation in 1985 which he starred Oprah Winfrey. Both Spielberg and Winfrey are executive producers on the new project. This new adaptation was directed by Blitz Bazawule (Black Is King, Kojo’s Burial).
The Color Purple stars Taraji P. Henson (What men want, hidden figures), Danielle Brooks (Peacemaker, orange is the new black), Colman Domingo (Black Bottom by Ma Rainey, Fear the Walking Dead), Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, BlacKkKlansman), HIS (Judas and the Black Messiah, Beauty and the Beast: A Thirtieth Celebration), Halle Bailey (The little mermaid, grown up), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard, if Beale Street could talk), AND Barino fantasy in his major film debut.
The script is by Marcus Garley (Waitress, The Who) and the music and lyrics were written by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
The film will be released in theaters on December 25.
