Thora Bitch (American beauty, ghost worldAND Walking Dead) will make his feature film directorial debut with an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s 2004 crime novel Mister Paradise.

The story centers on Kelly, “an aspiring model, who witnesses a murder and becomes entangled in a web of intrigue.” The description of the novel reads:

Mr Paradise pays Chloe and Kelly to play cheerleaders. Him dancing while watching reruns of Michigan’s best football games. At least that’s the story Adjutant Montez Taylor tells cop Frank Delsa. Delsa is called in to investigate a double old man Paradise and a girl dressed as a cheerleader. She has a best man, a second cheerleader, but she can’t decide whether to call herself Chloe or Kelly. It seems that no one is playing straight, least of all the two trigger-happy hitmen who roam the mean streets of Detroit. But with a beautiful witness who may or may not want her protection, Delsa is ready to buy time Elmore Leonard is in top form with Mr Paradise, set right in his Detroit hometown of Motor City, the scene of many of his greatest successes books.

Birch said in a statement, “I grew up loving so many successful adaptations of Leonard’s work such as Take Shorty AND Jackie Brown. I find his world of bumbling criminal characters, snappy dialogue, and constant pursuit of sex and status endlessly entertaining. Mr. Paradise provides an ideal new lens to see Leonard through the eyes of our intriguing female protagonist as she navigates the Detroit underworld and a tenacious police investigator. The real heart of the film is the search for an escape from the quiet despair and decay of Rust Belt Detroit, and the hope that a new love may provide that escape.

Producer Michael Walters added, “Thora brings a fresh take on the Elmore Leonard canon, and her brilliant sense of irony is perfect for Leonard’s biting humor. Leonard’s novel is a terrific source material, and this project exemplifies my intellectual property-based approach to development.”

Take Shorty AND Jackie Brown they were great books and film adaptations, but I never read them Mister Paradise. Sounds like another interesting story and a great project for Birch to direct. I think it’s great that Birch is trying to direct.
