Arnold offers updates on his long-awaited sequel to CONAN

Years ago there was talk of carrying Arnold Schwarzenegger returned for a sequel to Conan, and the idea of that movie has fans like me incredibly excited! I’m actually shocked that this movie isn’t out yet, but it’s one that needs to be made!

During a recent interview with THR, Schwarzenegger offered an update on this project, and it looks like a frustrating mess. He said:

“It’s been on hold for 10 years. [Fredrik] Malmberg holds the rights. He comes up to me and says, “Oh, I have a deal with Netflix,” and when we ask Netflix, they don’t know about it. It’s one of those crazy things. I hope you understand that. I think you do it like Unforgiven, where you play age. There’s a great script out there that John Milius has written, and others have written one. The story is there. There are directors who want to do that. But he has the rights, and until he sells the rights to a movie or two, or the franchise, there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Three years ago, it was reported that Netflix was developing a Conan the Barbarian series, but then there was no update and nothing ever happened.

As for what the sequel would entail, it would have been a direct sequel to the classic 1982 film that cut short with an older King Conan sitting on his throne, deep in thought, wearing the jeweled crown of Aquilonia on his forehead. Chris Morgan wrote a script for a version of the sequel and, speaking about it, he said:

“It opens with this [hand on the chin]. It’s where you have to. It’s the sequel we were promised and never got. I was 11 when my dad took me to see Conan the Barbarian, which you should never take an 11-year-old to. It was a life changing thing. It’s an incredible movie. Back to [director John] Million, right? There is no one better and it is a real movie. It’s a true film. Chris and I said from the beginning there was no reason to do it unless it was a worthy sequel to Milius’ Conan and I think we have it. Really.

Morgan previously spoke about the author of Conan Robert E. Howard and the inspiration behind the film, saying:

“We look at all the source material and we love things that speak in that tone. We are incredibly respectful to Howard. I’m a huge fan of the stories and the books, but I’m a huge fan of the first movie, because this one crystallized and distilled all for me. [John] Milius just killed him. He’s done a great job. And Legend Of Conan is really resonant and really delves into the legacy of that original film. I’m already very proud of it.”

Morgan also described his take on Conan, which is what initially got me excited about this project:

“I want the warrior whose joints have started to fuse together, who has to break the cartilage to be able to wield a sword again. I want the guy who hasn’t necessarily lost a step, but there’s some rust he needs to shake off.” I want to hug him, it makes him a bigger hero story.

“Conan needs to face challenges. The biggest challenge for him isn’t the armies that are placed before him. It’s, on some level, self-doubt, kind of slowing you down and forcing yourself to be heroic beyond what people expect from you. What I don’t want is for you to step back and look the same. That would defeat the purpose of our story.”
