Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum has voiced several DC characters over the years in animated projects such as Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond, Justice League: DestinyAND Batman: Arkham Knight.
Well, the actor, best known for his role as Lex Luthor, has revealed that he has auditioned for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the upcoming animated series. Batman: Caped Crusader. She spoke about his experience with him and revealed that she didn’t get the role because he couldn’t nail Bruce Wayne’s voice. She said on her Inside of You podcast:
“We had another one [audition], Remember? The Batman series… It was JJ Abrams and Bruce Timm who created Justice League: Unlimited. He just got busted, but I remember going to call back with him and everybody. And you know, I think my Batman was really good. I think they were really happy with Batman, but I don’t think they were happy with Bruce Wayne. I could say.”
Batman: Caped Crusader is the spiritual successor of Batman: The Animated Serieswas initially developed for HBO Max by the producers JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves AND Bruce Tim. After Warner Bros. canceled the project, it came to Amazon with a two-season order.
I’d be curious to know what Rosenbaum’s opinion of Batman would have been! It is not yet known who was cast in the role.
Timm has previously opened up about the show sharing that it’s “more Batman: The Animated Series Of Batman: The Animated Series.” The show will capture what Timm was originally trying to do with the original animated series, saying, “It sort of goes back to the original principles of the show that we originally came up with in the early ’90s. There were some limitations on what we could do in terms of adult content; in terms of violence and adult themes.” He went on to say, “My idea is basically to say, ‘OK, it’s 1990 again, I can do whatever I want to do this time, and I’ve got JJ and Matt backing me up. on.”
Abrams said so Batman: Caped Crusader“It really is an incredibly complex psychological story about someone who, in a way, needs to be redeemed — and that’s at least the subject of this first season.”
The series was written by an acclaimed comic book writer Ed Brubaker, who said: “Their take on the show, with a slightly meatier take on the character, and a new way of looking at the world of Gotham, set in the past but seen through a modern lens, has really convinced me, and so far every some of it was a blast to work with. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what we’ve built up in the last few months in the writers room. All I can say is that it’s not what anyone expects…but in a good way.”
The show will focus on a version of Batman who is completely alone on his journey. Reeves explained, “There’s no Justice League. It doesn’t exist. There are no other superheroes. It’s Batman. You’re looking at this lone figure swimming in Gotham’s cesspool. It’s Batman, alone.”
It’s also been explained that Batman won’t get all of his gadgets since the show takes place before he starts investing money in that stuff. “So initially it’s going to be very low-tech. You know, as he develops as a character, we’ll start introducing those gadgets and the audience will be able to see how he’s developed the Batmobile using different prototypes. Part of the fun of this series is that we’re finding him while discovers these things that, [in] most of the other Batman series, they were already there.”
