Mike Mignola says HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN is the most faithful adaptation of Hellboy ever made

The new Hell boy movie Hellboy: The crooked man completed filming and, while production on the film wrapped, the creator of the franchise Mike Mignola shared his thoughts on the film, calling it one of the most faithful adaptations ever made. She shared on Instagram:

“I wasn’t on set for this movie but they were kind enough to send me dailies and I have to say I loved what I saw. If fans have been waiting for a Hellboy movie that is actually an adaptation of one of my stories I think that they will finally have one.

“Congrats to director Brian Taylor and the truly wonderful cast – and co-writer Chris Golden who did so much to figure out how to give the studio what it wanted and stay true to the heart and soul of THE CROOKED MAN, my favorite of the Hellboy stories.”

It’s pretty exciting to hear from the creator of Hell boy! I hope he’s right because I think he said the same thing about the last one Hell boy movie that was made and that movie was not good at all.

Mignola and Golden Chris wrote the film’s screenplay, and the story is based on the comic of the same name, and in that story, Hellboy teams up with a rookie BPRD agent named Tom Ferrell, and they find themselves stranded in rural 1990s Appalachia 50. “There they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with an eerie connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.” The story “will expand the world of Hellboy through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series.”

Brian Taylor (Crank, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Player) is directing the film and speaking earlier about the director, Mignola said:

“His intention is to make a horror movie, so that’s going to be nice. It will be interesting. Yesterday I read the new draft of the script and yes, it’s definitely R. It’s the first Hellboy script I’ve read and I said, “Oh, it’s a horror movie,” which is what I wanted. Taylor doesn’t have a reputation as a director of horror films. But, so far, we’ve had two horror film directors make Hellboy movies and we’ve never gotten a horror film.

“For years, we’ve said, if you’re going to make a Hellboy movie, make it small. And the perfect story to do that with is my favorite, ‘The Crooked Man’. I think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written. It’s beautifully illustrated by Richard Corben and is a solid story that doesn’t involve a million different characters. Everyone agreed from the start, ‘Yeah, we want to do that.’ Budget-wise, that’s okay because it’s a lower-budget story. It’s not Hellboy’s origin. It’s not Hellboy saving the world. It’s not huge. It’s a subtle, dark, popular little horror story.

The film is the protagonist Jack Kesy as Hellboy, Jefferson White, Adeline RodolfoAND Leah McNamara. When she shared her thoughts on Kesy as Hellboy, Mignola said, “I’ve never met [Kesy]. I’ve only seen pictures and I’ve seen it a bit in the movies. It certainly has the look. Everyone who has worked with him says he is fantastic. This thing was done really fast, so I think the fact that it’s great and helpful, that’s me being a little smart about it, but I just have to trust that everyone is right.

Hellboy: The crooked man will get an R rating, and speaking of that rating, the director said, “We’ve definitely discussed about, you know, there’s really no need for anyone to do something R for the sake of R. To say it has to be R, so we have to add A , B and C. But this material, this source material is dark and scary and violent and adult. So to really accept that, we don’t want to have handcuffs.

Are you excited about this new Hellboy movie? Do you think it could really breathe life into the franchise?
