The 1994 movie Forrest Gump it’s one of those movies that fans still watch and enjoy decades later. Winning six Academy Awards in 1995, including best picture, best actor, best director and best screenplay, the unique story of a moving man on his imaginary journey through American history won over audiences, but was a total gamble according to the star of him, Tom Hanksand the director of the film, Roberto Zemeckis.
During a recent event at New Yorker Live to promote his new book, The making of another great cinematic masterpiece, Hanks admitted he doubted anyone cared about the 1994 historical novel epic. Zemeckis even warned Hanks that the film would be “a minefield.” Hank said:
“I say, ‘Hey Bob, I have a question for you. Will anyone be interested in this film?’ This guy sitting on a thing with these awkward shoes and this peek-a-boo suit with a suitcase full of Curious George books and stuff… are we doing anything here that makes sense to anyone? And Bob said, ‘It’s a minefield, Tom. It’s a minefield. We could sow the seeds of our own destruction. Any step we take can be a Bouncing Betty that will blow our balls off.’”
Hanks continued:
“Bob Zemeckis – God bless him, I’ve worked with him more than once – he came to the absolute truth of whoever went ahead and said, ‘Today we’re going to get busy filming something and eventually we’re going to cut it into something. You don’t know if that’s going to work ”.
Well, hindsight is 20/20 and the movie was obviously a hit. Forrest Gump it could have gone either way, but it will always be a classic and will always be regarded as one of Tom Hanks’ best performances.
