New trailer for Abel Ferrara’s religious drama PADRE PIO starring Shia LaBeouf

A new trailer for the religious drama has been released Father Piohero Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia, The Peanut Butter Hawk). The film comes from the director Abel Ferrara (Bad lieutenant, Siberia), from a script he co-wrote with Maurice Braucci.

LaBeouf is joined in the cast by Cristina Chiriac, Mark Leonard, Asia Argento, Vincent Crea, Luke Leonello, Brando Pacitto, Stella MastrantonioAND Salvatore Ruocco.

Here is the synopsis:

“In this powerful drama directed by acclaimed director Abel Ferrara, a young priest, Padre Pio (Shia LaBeouf), begins his ministry in a remote Capuchin convent in San Giovanni Rotondo in Italy. World War I is over and Italian soldiers – broken but victorious – are returning to the impoverished village ruled by wealthy landowners. As the events surrounding Italy’s first free elections threaten to tear the village apart, Padre Pio wrestles with his personal demons, eventually emerging from his spiritual anguish to become one of Catholicism’s most revered figures.

This trailer didn’t sell me on this movie. LaBeouf says this movie saved him, and I like him as an actor, so I’m happy with it, but I still don’t think I really want to see him. Ferrara movies are usually pretty good out there, and I’m still not convinced of that. Check out the trailer for yourself and let us know what you think. Father Pio will be released in select US theaters on June 2.
