Dave Filoni Says Grand Admiral Thrawn Is ‘Definitely’ The Big Bad Of The New Republic Era

Star Wars fans were very excited to see Grand Admiral Thrawn make his live-action debut Star Wars: Ahsoka. Lars Mikkelsen is set to reprise his role on the series, and as you may have suspected, Thrawn is the big bad of the New Republic era who Dave Filoni AND Jon Favreau they have played.

During a recent interview with Empire, Filoni was asked if Thrawn was the “big bad guy of this New Republic era,” and he responded by saying, “Definitely, in my eyes.” He went on to say:

“Thrawn became a very iconic villain, because he was unlike anything we’ve seen before. He wasn’t another villain wearing a helmet and wielding a lightsaber.”

Thrawn is “a leader, a military strategist, a Moriarty archetype, someone who will outrun you, outstrategize you.” These are all the reasons why fans love Thrawn and what makes him so interesting and unique Star Wars scoundrel. The “Heir to the Empire” is coming, and he is “a key player in this time period”.

Mikkelsen previously teased Thrawn’s final agenda and how it might not become apparent until late in the show:

“[Filoni’s] the writing is very good. It’s very strong. And all the characters have their own drive, and you probably won’t know what that is until the last scene and I love that. I like that writing, that it takes its audience so seriously, you can see for yourself we drag it all the way to the reveal. What was it about?”

This is all just part of Filoni’s big event plans that will lead to the film that will carry it all The Mandalorian-set to Star Wars show together. That film will “close” the interconnected stories being told The Mandalorian, Boba Fett’s bookAND Ahsoka. It is also said to follow “the escalating war between the Imperials and the fledgling New Republic”.

Speaking of playing the live-action version of Thrawn, Mikkelsen assured fans they’ll be getting the same villainous character they’ve come to love over the years:

“It’s hard to get into that without getting into the narrative, you know, because obviously there was some time between the rebels and where do we get into the story here. So, and that time what happened at that moment left its mark on him, but Generally speaking, it’s still the same guy, man You see, you see that’s how you’re in, you know, what are you hoping for?

Mikkelsen also shared what makes Thrawn such an interesting villain and that his mastermind is what makes him such a formidable foe to Ahsoka and all the other characters of the New Republic era. He explained:

“That dude, he doesn’t have the strength. He’s not a Jedi, he’s not a superhero of any kind, but he’s got brains. He’s got all that about it. How does that compare to characters like Ahsoka, Sabine, and all these other people that we’re going to see and maybe we’re going to collide in the live-action series?I think, I mean, what I mean, his superpower is his mind, which is really and always like seven steps ahead of everyone. , I think. So that’s what you expect.

Filoni also spoke about Thrawn and explained what sets him apart from the iconic Star Wars villain Darth Vader, comparing him to the Sherlock Holmes character Moriarty:

“The genius of Thrawn is that he’s not Darth Vader. He doesn’t even try to be. He doesn’t have the Force. But he’s smart and calculating. He’s like a Moriarty, he’ll outrun you and make a chess move on you, so those are the things that I really liked them.”

Ahsoka it is set after the fall of the Empire. Ahsoka “follows former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) while investigating an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

Ahsoka and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) are on the hunt for Thrawn in hopes that he will lead them to find the lost Ezra Bridger, the young Jedi who disappeared with Thrawn many years ago. The series directly follows on from several threads from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Hera Syndulla in the series and the droid Chopper is also back. The series is also starring Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, Ivanna Sakhno, Eman Esfandi like EzraAND Ray Stevenson. The limited series is written by Dave Filoni which produces executive along with Jon Favreau AND Kathleen Kennedy.

The series will debut exclusively on Disney+ in August 2023.
