Warner Bros. Discovery is bringing Barney the Purple Dinosaur back to life for a new CG animated series called Barney’s World! The series will arrive on Max and Cartoon Network in 2024 and will present new adventures with Barney and his friends.
The revival series will “revamp the iconic character for modern audiences.” The show is set in a local playground, where Barney is joined by his dinosaur friends Billy and Baby Bop and their three best child friends.
WBD and Mattel TV said in a statement: “Barney’s World is modernized with dynamic characters and music-filled storylines that highlight the themes of love, community, and encouragement. Through silly and imaginative adventures together, Barney helps kids explore big preschool emotions and shows them how to love themselves and each other.
Warner Bros. Discovery Michael Ouwelenpresident of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang said: “Barney’s World perfectly exemplifies our “best in animation” approach. It strikes the right nostalgic chord for today’s parents and introduces this iconic dinosaur to a new generation of preschoolers.
Fred Soulie, SVP and GM of Mattel Television, added, “Having grown up watching the original series, many of today’s parents have fond memories of laughing, singing and lessons with Barney and his friends. We are proud to partner with Warner Bros. Discovery to reinvent this iconic brand and bring a fresh, modern take on Barney to a global family audience.”
So, for those of you with young children, brace yourself because Barney could end up being a big part of your life! My kids grew up with the original Barney, they watched that show all the time and I’m so glad I’ll never have to watch that Purple Dino again. I’m not one of the parents with fond memories of Barney.
Barney’s World will be executive produced by Soulie e Christopher Keenan for Mattel Television and by Colin Bohm, Douglas Murphy AND Pam Westmann for Nelvana.
Mattel also announced earlier this year that it will expand the franchise into movies and YouTube content as well as music and a full lineup of children’s products, including books and apparel. Clothing and accessories for adult fans are also in development, featuring the classic Barney.
