HBO’s Max has released a new full trailer for the awesome animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai! As a longtime fan of the Grmlin franchise, I’m quite excited about this show and it looks like it will deliver a fun, magical and adventure story!
Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai is a period piece set in 1920s Shanghai, “the series reveals how 10-year-old Sam Wing – who becomes the future owner of the Mr. Wing store in the 1984 film – met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. They strike up a lifelong friendship as Wing attempts to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling monsters and colorful spirits from Chinese folklore. Meanwhile, the two and street thief Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.
The half-hour animated series comes from WB Animation and Amblin TV and both Steven Speilberg AND Gio Dante are executive producers of the project together with Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios.
The voice cast of the series includes Ming Na Wen (Agents of SHIELD, THE Mandalorian, Mulan), James Hong (Big trouble in Little China, Blade Runner, Mulan), bdwong (Mister Robot, Jurassic world ), AND Izaac Wang.
Wing Fong (voiced by Ming Na Wen)—Fong Wing is Sam’s mother and a Chinese medicine doctor. She is resourceful, slyly funny, and fiercely protective of her family, even her often troubled father. She will do anything to help and protect her child from her.
Grampa (voiced by James Hong)—A free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myths and magic, his grandfather is the eldest in the Wing family. He claims to have traveled the world on great adventures, but no one really believed him…until now. Only he knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them.
Hon. Ala (voiced by bdwong)—Hon Wing is Sam’s father and the calm rock of the family. He never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure. But when he and Fong part ways with Sam, he realizes the world is stranger than he thought and he’ll have to get braver to reunite his family.
Sam Ala (voiced by Izaac Wang)—Sam Wing is a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeeper and Gizmo’s guardian in the original Gremlins movie. Young Sam lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine store. Guarded and cautious, Sam will be thrust into the adventure of a lifetime when he promises his grandfather that he will take Gizmo home.
Tze Chun serves as showrunner and executive producer, and the series will premiere on Max on May 23, 2023.
