Josh Lucas says Ang Lee’s HULK is a “super underrated” Marvel movie.

Back in 2003, before Marvel became the giant movie machine they are, Ang Lee direct Hulk. This is one Marvel movie that isn’t talked about enough! Hulk was a damn good movie and it’s still unlike any other comic book movie that’s ever been made.

I loved this movie when I first saw it, and every time I watch it, I tend to like it and enjoy it even more. It’s just such a unique film and I always believed it was grossly underrated. He’s an ambitious take on the Marvel character, and what made the film so striking was his audacity to push the boundaries of what was expected of a superhero movie, both in terms of storytelling and visual style.

One of the stars of the film, Josh Lucas feels the same way, and when asked about it in a recent interview with CB, the actor said:

“Dude, I love that movie too. I’ll tell you what, I also agree with you that it’s super underrated. I haven’t seen a comic book movie that does quite like it [Lee] browse the pages. She was really trying to take the movie and mix it with the idea of you turning around and looking at a comic book.”

He added:

“Ang Lee is a great artist and he’s an auteur director who was handed the keys to the Marvel realm long before Marvel was Marvel and tried to bring something super arty to it. There’s an idea of the way where plant organisms work on the body and cellular structures and all these ideas that he’s playing with visually. I think Nick Nolte’s performance in that film is epic and as good as any villain in the history of cinema.

Luca (Yellow stone) played Talbot in the film, a character he sought to defeat Eric Banait’s Bruce Banner. The Marvel film explores the origins of Bruce Banner, a scientist who becomes the Hulk after an experiment goes awry. Unlike many other superhero films, the film takes its time to explore the psychological and emotional complexities of its hero. Lee’s approach to the material is more character-driven and focuses on Bruce Banner’s inner turmoil and personal demons.

Lee also made some bold choices regarding the film’s visual style. Rather than relying solely on traditional special effects, the film used a variety of techniques, including CGI, live action, and comic book-style split-screen, to create a uniquely immersive cinematic experience. The result was a film that felt like a living cartoon, with vivid, colorful visuals and dynamic action sequences that leapt off the screen.

The film was ahead of its time, and in an earlier interview, Lucas discussed Lee’s brilliance and the technological limitations they were working with at the time, saying:

“If people ask me who my favorite directors are, I’ll almost invariably tell you my number one is Ang. I don’t use that word genius, but I think he’s really up there as a brilliant, if not brilliant director. As you say, he was swinging for the beams [Hulk]. I don’t think the technology was where his brain was. And if you look at what he did with Life of Pi, he was able to hit it out of the park.

“I think the technology evolved, and he’s one of the people who pushed the technology to evolve. I know he was pushing the team of people who were at the Hulk CGI to do something that, technically, maybe he wasn’t able to to be at the level where he still wanted it and so I think he was very frustrated with that movie because he wasn’t able to get what he wanted and what he had in mind.

“But I also agree with you, the way he was transforming, the way the pages were turning. I mean, he was creating a visual comic, and I haven’t seen anyone doing it the same way he was doing it — think about it, it’s been 20 years, right? So, there’s an incredible auteur director under this monster, one of the first Marvel movies. I have nothing but respect for that.”

If you haven’t watched Lee’s Hulk in a while, you should revisit it! If you’ve never seen it, you have to watch it! What do you think of this classic Hulk movie?
