The film will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Angel has fallen) from a script written by Marco Biancolli (Hunters). Stallone is also a producer on the project and the casting process for the rest of the cast is currently underway.

While there are no story details to share for the sequel, we do know that Stallone will reprise his character of Ranger Gabriel “Gabe” Walker, from the original film directed by Renny Harlin. That original film followed Walker as he helped rescue a group of stranded hikers, only to discover that they were actually a gang of violent criminals who were trying to recover their missing $100 million following a plane crash. That film also starred John Lithgow, Michael RockerAND Janine Turner.

Waugh said in a statement, “Growing up with the biggest action movies of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favorite shows. To be at the helm of the next chapter, climbing the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It will be a huge challenge and a blast to take this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Producer Neal H. Moritz he added: “I will never forget the emotion I felt watching Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. I am incredibly excited to work with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and introduce this iconic story to a new generation of viewers around the world.

Stallone recently sealed a deal to produce and star in the action comedy Never too old to diewhich was conceived as a starring vehicle for him and landed at Amazon Studios.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen the original movie, but with the sequel announced, I’ll have to revisit it and see if it’s as ridiculous and cheesy as I remember.
