Director Ridley Scott is preparing for production on his Gladiator sequel, which I don’t think anyone thought would actually happen. But this project will definitely come to fruition and was recently announced Connie Nielsen will reprise her role as Lucilla. It has also been revealed that the Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn is in talks to play the emperor Caracalla.

Nielson and Quinn join the previous cast Paul Mescal like Lucio, Barry Keoghan as Emperor Geta, e Denzel Washington in a mysterious role.
The film centers on Lucius, son of Lucilla and grandson of Commodus, son of the Roman leader Marcus Aurelius who killed his father and took the throne. Commodus met his downfall in the gladiatorial arena against Maximus, who despite being mortally wounded, defeated the emperor before moving on to reunite with his family. Maximus had saved Lucio and his mother, leaving a lasting impact on the boy.
It will be interesting to see the mother-son relationship between Lucius and Lucilla expand in the sequel, as it should play a large part of the film’s story arc.
The return from the original film are as well John Mathieson as cinematographer, Arthur Max as production designer and Janty Yates as costume designer. Paramount Pictures dated the film to November 22, 2024.
