Call Powley on why her limited series, A Small Light, is the Anne Frank story you didn’t know before – the actors’ side

Bel Powley has already achieved a lot in her relatively young career. Starting with her breakthrough film role in 2015 diary of a teenager, for which she won several awards and continues to play important roles in films such as White Boy Rick, Royal Night Out And King of Staten Island Together with Pete Davidson, she also made her name on television as Birdy in 2022 All I know about love and as Claire Conway in it The morning program.

Now she probably has her most important role yet in the new limited series A little light from National Geographic, starting Monday. In addition to being available on Disney+ and Hulu during this Emmy season, it will also be available on Lifetime and other outlets.

She plays Miep Gies, an ordinary woman who finds herself in extraordinary circumstances when she is urged by her boss Otto Frank to hide him and his family from Nazi discovery during World War II. She did this from 1942 to 1944 when, sadly, they were finally found and shipped off to concentration camps. They all died except Otto, and Gies remained the key to what we know today The diary of Anne Frank because it was she who found it after the war and kept it for Otto, who would live with her and her husband Jan for another seven years.

In this week’s edition of my deadline video series, The Actor’s Side, Powley talks about this remarkable story and being able to play Gies, whose story has been largely lost until now; It is not only about the gruesome attempts to hide this Jewish family in Amsterdam, but also a coming-of-age story of this young woman and her new marriage. Powley talks about its relevance today in light of rising anti-Semitism, as well as investigating, filming the real Frank House and why this limited series can make a difference. We also talk about her booming career and much more.
