Steven Spielberg regrets editing guns from ‘ET’: ‘It was a mistake’

Steven Spielberg admits he made a mistake cutting out guns ET the extraterrestrial.

At the Time 100 summit, the driver explained why he made the changes in the first place and why he now regrets it.

“It was a mistake. I never should have done that,” Spielberg said of assembling guns from the sci-fi film.E.T is a product of its time. No film should be reviewed based on the lenses we are now, whether willing or forced to see through.

He continued, “E.T was a film where I was sensitive to the federal agents approaching children with open guns and I thought I would turn the guns into walkie talkies… Years passed and I changed my mind. I should never have messed with the archives of my own work, and I advise no one to do so.”

ET the extraterrestrial was released in 1982 about an alien who remains on Earth after the rest of his group is driven away by US government vehicles. The stranger befriends a 10-year-old boy who helps protect him until he can find his way back home.

“All of our films are kind of a guide to where we were when we made them, what the world was like, and what the world got when we put these stories out there,” Spielberg added. “So I really regret having it there.”

ET the extraterrestrial was written by Melissa Mathison and the cast of the film included Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore.
