Davies previously spoke about the journey leading up to the introduction of the 15th Doctor: “If you thought David Tennant’s appearance came as a shocker, we have plenty more surprises to come. Ncuti’s path to the Fifteenth Doctor is filled with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun. And how does that relate to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We give you a year to speculate, and then all hell will break loose.”

Speaking earlier about his spin-off plans, Davies said: ‘So I thought – without any criticism of the people who were running it at the time, because they were running it within BBC measures – it had come time for the next phase for Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms were ready, the spin-offs were ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there. I did Torchwood as a spin-off, The Sarah Jane Adventures as a spin -off. Those spin-off -offs dropped off when I left, and I can see why. And I left well after 2008, when money got scarce, I think it’s fair enough for the public service broadcaster that the money is spent on other things.”
