There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Lucasfilm’s upcoming live-action Star Wars: Ahsoka series. I’d say most of that excitement comes from Star Wars fans who attended The Clone Wars AND Rebelsbut if you haven’t watched the animated ones Star Wars shows, don’t worry… Dave Filoni says you don’t need to look at them to understand the Ahsoka series. “We never want to create a situation where you feel like you must have seen these things because then you’re missing out on something. I don’t know how the fans feel, but do you have to have seen The Clone Wars to understand Ahsoka? No, you mustn’t have seen it.
However, he goes on to explain that watching it will help and help you understand him more:
“It helps, will you know more and understand more? Sure. But it’s not — if you haven’t checked it out, but you can, thanks to Disney Plus, it’s right there. We picked up A New Hope at Episode 4, right? So Star Wars, for us, fell somewhere in the middle. So there’s sort of a story in Star Wars where you dive right into the story. So I really dive into the story with Ahsoka, but I know more about that through the work of The Mandalorian”.
If you haven’t looked The Clone Wars however, I say you should 100% watch it! I didn’t watch it until after the last season came out, and I was completely blown away by it Star Wars storytelling. The last season in particular is one of the greatest things ever produced Star Wars! Absolutely love it The Clone Warsso if Filoni won’t tell you that you have to watch it, I will!
The series expands on the story and lore in great ways, and it also helped me enjoy the prequel trilogy so much more. But, moreover, some of the characters of The Clone Wars AND Rebels are now making their way into live-action thanks to The Mandalorian, and it’s nice to hear about the past story arcs of these characters. Then, watch animated shows if you haven’t already.
Ahsoka is set after the fall of the Empire and “follows former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) while investigating an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.
Ahsoka and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) are on the hunt for Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) in the hope that it will lead them to find the lost Ezra Bridger, the young Jedi who disappeared with Thrawn many years before. The series directly follows on from several threads from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Hera Syndulla, Chopper also returns Hayden Christensen Anakin Skywalker returns, and the rest of the cast includes Ivanna Sakhnoand like ShinHati, Eman Esfandi like EzraAND Ray Stevenson like Baylon.
The limited series is written by Dave Filoni which produces executive along with Jon Favreau AND Kathleen Kennedy. The series will debut exclusively on Disney+ in August 2023.
