The court jester it was a move I grew up with that a lot of people I meet tend not to know about. It was released in 1955 and stars Danny Kaye, Rathbone Basil, Angela LansburyAND Glynis Johns. It’s a comedy musical with hilarious action scenes and is the source of many quotes used by me and my family. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you take 1 hour and 41 minutes to watch it. It’s a movie you can enjoy with the whole family.

Recently, the YouTuber Jill Bearup shared a video discussing the iconic sword fight between Kaye and Rathbone. Bearup has been fighting on stage for several years and shares some insights into the fight itself, why Rathbone used a stunt double despite him being one of the best fencers of the time and more. It’s a fun watch with great insights.

Bearup does a great job of introducing combat, but I’ll do a quick rundown as well. Basically, Kaye’s character went undercover as a jester and assassin to help restore the rightful heir to the throne to said throne. Sadly, Kaye’s character isn’t very coordinated and isn’t one to perform well in combat. He’s hypnotized at the start of the fight by a witch, so every time someone snaps, he goes from being the awkward, bumbling character he normally is to a master swordsman. This makes for a hilarious fight and you should go watch The court jester.
