The Lord of the Rings protagonist of the trilogy Elijah Wood recently shared his thoughts on the new Middle-earth movies that Warner Bros. had announced. He explained in an interview with GQ magazine that he was “fascinated”, “excited” and “surprised” by the news. But he’s also worried that the studio is just making them a lot of money, which it obviously is.

He said: “I’m fascinated and I’m excited. I hope it’s good / I’m surprised, I don’t know why I’m surprised because obviously there would be more movies. He went on to talk about the whole money side of it by saying:

“Obviously at the heart is the desire to make a lot of money. It’s not like a bunch of executives say, “We make really great art.” And, again, don’t envy anyone because, of course, it’s commerce. But great art can come from commerce. So these two things are not mutually exclusive.

Wood went on to point out that the Peter Jackson trilogy “didn’t get out of that place” commercially, and he hopes that’s what drives these new projects. He explained:

“It was born out of a passion for these books and a desire to see them made, and I hope that ultimately that’s what will carry everything forward with whatever these subsequent films are. I just hope it’s the same motivating factor behind, whenever they hire a writer and director, that it’s with respect for Tolkien’s material and enthusiasm to explore it.

I too am excited about these new Middle Earth films, but I hope that whoever comes on board to develop them brings the heart and soul of JRRTolkienProject work. Peter Jackson is in talks with the studio and they want him involved. If that happens, I think fans will definitely be more confident in what these movies end up being.

In a statement released earlier on the new Lord of the Rings projects, Jackson, Fran Walsch AND Philippa Boyens he said, “Warner Brothers and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward. We look forward to speaking with [the studio] further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.

Are you excited about the future of the Middle-earth film franchise?
