Before it was announced late last year that we would be getting a new one Tornado titled below Twisters from Universal, another sequel was in the works from the original star Elena Caccia and she Blindspotting co-star Daveed Diggs (Hamilton). The pair were co-writing a sequel that Hunt intended to direct, but the project was killed off before it could get off the ground.

In a recent interview with Insider, Diggs said:
“Oh man, I won’t go into it mostly because I’ll probably misremember things. But all I will say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about it, and it didn’t happen, and the reasons why it didn’t happen are potentially shady. But shady in the way we know the industry is shady.
After the studio refused to even see Hunt and hear his pitch, Hunt explained to Andy Cohen See what happens live in 2021:
“I tried to make it happen. With Dave [Diggs] and Raphael [Casal] and me writing it, and all the black and brown storm chasers, and they wouldn’t. I was going to direct it… We could barely get a meeting together, and this is in June of 2020, when it was about diversity. It would have been so nice. There was an HBCU [historically Black college and university] where we wanted it to take place, and a rocket science club. In this one, they fire rockets into the tornado. That would have been great.
It’s really sad and ridiculous that the studio didn’t even hear his presentation! She was the star of the first film and is a well respected actress in Hollywood. It’s weird that they shut it down and then came up with an idea that didn’t even involve her. I was pretty excited about the sequel but knowing this gives it a bad vibe.
The movie they ended up with is directed by Minaries Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung. The screenplay is signed by Mark L. Smithwhich co-wrote the Oscar-winning Alejandro G. Iñárritu The avenger. Daisy Edgar-Jonesbest known for Normal people, Under the banner of heavenAND Where the crayfish singstars in the lead role. Twisters will be released in theaters on July 19, 2024.
