Dave Filoni has come a long way from the days when it was developing and manufacturing The Clone Wars series. During his early days at Lucasfilm, he was mentored by George Luke, so it’s no surprise that his directing and filmmaking style has infected Filoni. With Lucas he is no longer part of Star Wars franchise, Filoni is the closest thing Lucasfilm has to George Lucas.

Lucas pioneered everything we’re seeing from the Star Wars franchise right now, including how incredible it looks Ahsoka series, and during a recent interview with CB, Filoni spoke about the influence Lucas had on him as a director, saying:
“Now, all the lessons that George [Lucas] taught me are true. This is what I learned. You know, I still apply the same things she taught me in Clone Wars. You know? It’s interesting, I always use the word ‘concrete’. The things you shoot in live-action are very concrete. Where in animation, I can go back and edit a performance. Not so much in live action. To a greater extent than you would have in the past. I will say, when you watch the documentary, how Magic and George talk about the things he needed to make the movies he wanted to make and how digital technology integrated into the editing process.
“Not only in the visual effects, but also in the way you make and put together a film. We’ve all benefited from the way he and his creative team pioneered this. We’re able to do very flexible things now with film in a way that used to be impossible. So when you watch the older movies, when you go to see Seven Samurai, you really get the genius of what’s going on there because how did he capture what he captured? It makes you appreciate the older movies and the details they will pay attention to. That they simply had to get to the day in the moment. Those are things that I’ve learned going forward and I still enjoy trying to operate that way.”
Filoni is one of Lucasfilm’s biggest strengths right now. He and Favreau are doing amazing and exciting things with the franchise, and now he finally has the opportunity to direct his own Star Wars movie! That project will focus on the New Republic and “close” the interconnected stories being told The Mandalorian, Boba Fett’s book, Ahsokaand other Disney+ programs.
While a lot of movies at Lucasfilm tend not to work out, I’m pretty confident that at least this one actually will!
