Artificial Intelligence or AI is a very hot topic right now and has been for a while. It used to be a relegated term for things in science fiction and now it’s popping up everywhere. Companies love to use AI as a buzzword to promote their guitar amps, search engines, cars, vacuum cleaners, and pretty much everything in between. Meanwhile, artists, writers, and many other human workers have less than kind things to say about it. I swear, I can’t go to any corner of the internet and not hear or see something that doesn’t talk about AI in some way. The comedian Adam Conover I recently talked more about the issues with AI and I think it’s worth a look.

Whether or not you’re on the AI hype train, it’s important to recognize that there are good uses for it and then there are problematic uses for it. It’s also important to recognize that there are big problems with the technology itself and how it’s used. Many times, AI technology is not used ethically and that is a big problem. AI is being used to hurt humans in various ways, create inferior products and more, while we consumers are being told that technology will improve our lives and experiences.

Conover has talked about AI and some of its problems before, including her name on an episode of her podcast In fact! which I highly recommend, and most recently took to YouTube to discuss it again. The video is less than 20 minutes long and highlights many of the issues and implications that come with AI. He talks about how Google and Microsoft asked tech ethicists to point out that there are ethical issues with AI and then those ethicists were fired. Covers how Tesla lied about using AI in videos. This is just a small sample.

I don’t want to be a full Debby Downer, and I admit, like Conover, that there are useful applications of AI like collision detection in cars and adaptable video game characters. I think, like most things, AI can be used to help people and help the world; it just takes education and understanding to find the best place for it in our world and not just try to use it everywhere.
