As you know, Chris Pratt AND Charlie Day were cast in the roles of Mario and Luigi, and Leguizamo feels like the creative team screwed up the film’s casting due to its lack of inclusion. The actor previously told TMZ:
“No I will not do it [be watching]. They could have included a Latin character. As if I was a revolutionary and then they stopped the revolutionary. They messed up the inclusion. They excluded. Just throw some Latino folks! We are 20% of the population. People outnumber the color group and we are underrepresented.
When asked again by TMZ if he would watch the film, Leguizamo replied, “Hell no!”
Leguizamo has spoken out against the film since it was first announced saying the reboot of the Mario film was a good idea but it was “too bad they’ve all gone white!” No Latinx in mind! Innovative colorblind casting in the original! Plus I’m the only one who knows how to make this movie work script-wise!
While speaking to IndieWire last year, Leguizamo said the new film is “in reverse” to have two white actors voice the main characters. He went on to talk about his experience with the version of the film he made and how the directors fought to get him in the film:
“I’m OG. A lot of people love the original. I did Comic-Con in New York and Baltimore, and everyone was like, “No, no, we love the old one, the original.” They don’t hear the new one.’ I’m not bitter. It’s unfortunate.
“Directors Annabel Jankel and Rocky Morton fought hard for me to star because I was a Latino man, and they [the studio] he didn’t want me to be the protagonist. They fought very hard and it was such a breakthrough. For them to go back and not throw another one [actor of color] it sucks.
I liked the new Super Mario Bros. movie, but obviously it won’t be for everyone. What do you think of the new film? What do you think of what Leguizamo is saying here?
