Throughout the film, the mischievous bard, Edgin (Chris Pino), converses with the surly warrior Holga (Michelle Rodriguez), about Holga’s ex, Mariamin, for whom he still has feelings. At some point in the characters’ journey, Holga decides to stop by the village where she and Mariamin lived to see him again. When she gets to the door, the audience realizes two things: one, she’s a halfling, a D&D race that looks like an adult human but stands about three feet tall; and two, he is played by Bradley Cooper.

What follows is a tender scene between Holga and Mariamin where they sit at Mariamin’s cottage and discuss their failed relationship, and it’s a total blast. Cooper is such a fantastic actor and brings such charm to every part that he plays, so it’s fun to hear how he’s been cast in this role.

In a recent interview with the film’s cinematographers, John Francis Daley AND Jonathan GoldsteinVariety asked them how it went about landing Cooper for the role, and Daley explained:

I did a show [in 2005] called Kitchen Confidential with Bradley which only lasted 13 episodes. We had so much fun on that show because the stakes were so low. We all thought we were going to be cancelled. And, you know, he’s become a huge, prolific, incredible movie star director.

We had thought of a really funny cameo for this part. He was sent to his agent but I sent him a letter saying, “It would be fun to play again.” I got a text from him from a number I didn’t know saying, “Yo, is that John yet?” And I said, “Who is this?” Because I’ve already received strange messages from strangers. He said “BC from KC”. I’m like, “What?” “‘Kitchen Confidential!'” I’m like, “Oh, shit!” I called him right away. He had just seen the film. He called it a triumph, which almost made me cry, because it was a really long process to work on this thing. And he said, “I agree. Sign me up.”

Daley said they’d already shot the scene with Michelle Rodriguez, and Goldstein explained that because they were going to reduce Cooper to a three-foot-tall half-man, it was easy enough to recreate and bluescreen behind him. . Daley added:

So we rebuilt the chair, which was huge. Then I got used to Holga’s performance. We didn’t want to change too many interpretations of her from her side of her, because we’re really happy with how she played it. But we also wanted there to be some chemistry and rapport between them. And so it was Bradley’s idea for me to read with him for old time reminiscing. So that’s what I did.

Daley went on to say that they’d had someone else in the part before, as a kind of placeholder, as it was hard to get big stars to commit to flying out to film a scene for just one day amid strict Covid protocols. . Cooper was the dream casting choice from day one, and it all fell into place in the end. And it’s so awesome that he did it!
