Before the director Rod Amateau he jumped aboard at the helm The children’s film The Trash Can in 1987, the film was to be directed by John Carl Buechler. Buechler was best known for directing films such as Troll, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Ghoulies Go to Collages, and more. You have worked primarily in special effects on a lot of film projects over the years.

Buechler’s initial launch for The children of the garbage can it was a simple horror movie concept, and it looks like it would have been a crazy movie! What we do know about the story he pitched is that The Garbage Pail Kids allegedly arose from radioactive sludge that found its way to a garbage can full of broken dolls, and turned them into serial killers!
Sounds like it would have been a much better movie than what we got! A bunch of Garbage Pail Kids serial killers running around the city killing people!? What a wild movie that could have been.
The funny thing is that Topps wanted something more light-hearted and kid-friendly! If you watch the movie now, it’s definitely not lighthearted or suitable for children! The movie is an absolutely disgusting nightmare! I saw the movie a couple of months ago and I can’t believe it was made!
You can hear us share our thoughts on the film in our previously released Secret Level podcast. We go into a lot of detail about the making of the movie and the craziness of making it.
While Buechler didn’t direct the film, he did work on the special effects and was instead the man behind the creation of the ultra-creepy masks and costumes, which were tortuous for the actors to wear them. When he mentioned working with the dwarfs in the costumes, the director shared his take on the whole thing, and it was insane! This is what he said:
“We took dwarfs and put heads on them, and we found out how long they could survive in there without breathing, and it turned out to be about five, seven minutes. So you had to try everything without the heads, put on heads, have a paramedic [with] a stopwatch. Little motherfuckers walk in there and you say action and shoot until they can’t breathe.
As I re-watched the movie as an adult, I couldn’t believe that this movie was actually made. Concepts like a state home for ugly people, teenagers looking like adults attempting to kill a little boy, and Garbage Pail Kids watching a little boy take a bath in the middle of the basement, are all so wildly wrong!
What do you think of the serial killer horror version of the movie? Would you like to see it done?
