Mubi is adding more than 50 feature films from Sony Pictures’ library in a new content deal

Mubi is adding more than 50 features from the Sony Pictures library to its US streaming service. The mix of studio and art house cuisine includes that of Steven Spielberg Close encounters of the third kindby Martin Scorsese The age of innocence, The latest photo show by Peter Bogdanovich and films by Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodovar and Guillermo Del Toro.

The company’s growing and global streaming service currently offers more than 900 titles in the US and adds a new movie to the platform every day. The Sony deal is a significant win, especially as studios have become more aggressive when it comes to keeping content for their own services. Uniquely, Sony does not have its own streaming platform.

Each Sony film will have its own window, some of which are already available and all of which will be available by the end of 2024. Other titles in the agreement include 2046 by Wong Kar-wai; Follower from Almodovar; safe by Todd Haynes; sleep with anger by Charles Burnett; paprika by Satoshi Kon; Marry Anderson’s bottle rocket; by Michael Hanke The White band; The Devil’s Backbone by Guillermo Del Toro; The manager by Chloe Zhao, Orlando by Sally Potter, spouse by John Cassavetes et al Synecdoche, New York by Charlie Kaufman

Mubi is also a distributor and recently also a manufacturer. South Korean Oscar shortlist decided to go by Park Chan-wook is the biggest US release to date. Acquisition of Sundance and Berlin parts, by Ira Sachs, opens in August.

In early 2022, the company acquired the distribution and production company The Match Factory and Match Factory Productions. It announced the production of Zia Anger My first video last fall

Mubi Go, a perk for premium streaming subscribers, offers a free movie ticket to a select movie in NYC, LA, Chicago, Seattle, Portland and Denver each week – this year it’s launching in more markets as it signs deals with cinemas close Indie distributors whose films are Mubi’s picks of the week say it certainly helps attract audiences.

Mubi’s basic plan in the US costs $12.99 per month or $17.99 with Mubi Go. It doesn’t publish sub numbers, but says it has 12 million members, a community of people who engage with or have accounts with Mubi.
