This weekend, stars Lauren Cohan and Gaius Charles, along with the showrunner Eli Jornewere on a panel at the WonderCon event in Anaheim, California, and Jorné explained what the new show has to offer both loyal fans of Walking Dead and newcomers.
“His Walking Dead like we’ve never seen it before. We have never really lived in a city like this. It’s New York; there are sky-high skyscrapers and a million and a half walkers. And for characters like Maggie and Negan, who have been running around in the woods for a long time, it’s just a whole new world that is extremely claustrophobic, scary, and also, as you’ll discover, has pockets of survivors, you’ll see all the weird new ways that they live in the apocalypse, it’s definitely unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
At panel, Cohan addressed the elephant in the room. What would this surprise between Negan, the man who killed her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun), and Maggie mean for both of them?
“It’s interesting because we see a very raw level of trauma that we know happened between Maggie and Negan. In Dead citywe really have the ability to do that [ask], ‘What is this? What does it take to cross it?’ And more than anything, it’s a chance for us to be forced together in this mission. The tension and immovable things are still very much there. We’ve seen them cross paths so often, but on this show, it’s really this tunnel that they’re trapped in to deal with things they might have run from, especially what Maggie ran away from and what Negan ran away from.[‘s presence] breed for her. It’s like an exercise in intimacy with the worst person.
Jorné further explained the complexity of their relationship this time around:
“It’s the next chapter in Maggie and Negan’s story, and so, in that sense, there’s a lot of pain and trauma and loss on both sides and how do you manage that? How does Maggie look into Negan’s face every day and remember what she did to the love of her life? That’s still a huge part of the show. For anyone who’s watched The Walking Dead all these years and connected to those characters, we’re continuing the story, growing and evolving and deepening it in a whole new landscape.
The Walking Dead: The Dead City follows Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as they journey through a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and inhabitants who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty and terror.
The Walking Dead: The Dead City will premiere Sunday, June 18 at 10 p.m. ET. It will air on AMC and AMC+. Subsequent episodes will move to the 9 p.m. ET timeslot. Check out the teaser below and let us know if you’ll be watching it.
