Before Brendan Fraser was officially cast as Link in the 1992 comedy classic Encino Manthe producers were considering a possible casting Ben Stiller in the role.

She auditioned for directors The Mayfields AND George Zaloom and even filmed a screen test for them. That screen test has now surfaced online for you to watch and it’s super fun and interesting to see what his portrayal of the character was like, and while it’s fun to see him play Link, Fraser was definitely the better choice.
Mayfield spoke of Stiller’s audition, saying it “demonstrated the character’s potential and was absolutely fantastic.” Zaloom went on to expand on whether Stiller was great and how they also saw Fraser around the same time, saying, “He was even screen-tested. And he did a really good job. But at one point we had seen Brendan. Brendan just nailed it.
Speaking of the audition, Mayfield added that Stiller “came in for free, had this audition and kicked some ass. He showed us where this character could go. But, in the end, they had to tell Stiller that it wasn’t him. Zaloom shared, “It was hard to tell Ben we didn’t want him. I kind of wish it didn’t happen.
