THE Tron the franchise is preparing to light up the gridiron again Tron: Ares is heading into its opening weekend, and despite some mixed reviews, it looks like the film is set to score a strong box office debut.
According to Variety, Disney’s sci-fi sequel is expected to open between $45 million and $50 million in North America, with international markets expected to bring in another $40 million to $45 million. That could push its global debut close to $95 million, putting it in line with Tron: Legacyof 2010’s opening of $44 million.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares explores humanity’s first contact with artificial intelligence when a digital program transitions into the real world. It’s a bold concept that leans heavily into the themes that have defined the series since the original Tron came out in theaters in 1982.
That film grossed $50 million worldwide against a modest $17 million budget, while the new sequel reportedly cost around $180 million, making it the most expensive entry in the series thus far.
Early reviews were split. Tron: Ares it currently holds a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 97 critic reviews, but audience tracking tells a different story, suggesting that moviegoers are far more eager to dive into the digital frontier than critics might expect.
Even though the reviews are mixed, I actually thought the movie was great! I had a blast! Maybe some critics simply don’t know how to have fun at the movies anymore.
The film is the protagonist Jared Leto like Ares, flanked by Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron MonaghanAND Gillian Anderson. Longtime fans will be excited to see Jeff Bridges returns once again as Kevin Flynn, tying this new chapter to the legacy of the franchise.
Adding to the excitement, Nine Inch Nails handled the soundtrack, which was incredible!
Tron: Ares isn’t the only movie making waves this weekend. Paramount’s Roofmanhero Channing Tatum AND Kirsten Dunstit is expected to gross between $8 million and $12 million, while The Kiss of the Spider Womanled by Jennifer Lopez AND Diego Lunait is heading for a softer opening of between $1.5 million and $3 million.
Disney may be looking for a good start for a film that combines cutting-edge visuals with nostalgic roots. Whether critics agree or not, the grid is live again and the public is clearly ready to log on.
Tron: Ares will be released in theaters on October 10, 2025.
