Shazam! Fury of the Gods it was supposed to make $53.3 million in its opening weekend, but eventually fell short and only made $30.5 million. The first Shazam! the film made $20.3 million on its first day, and the studio obviously expected something similar with the sequel, but it only made $11.7 million on its opening day.

On the r/boxoffice subreddit, there was a discussion about the disappointing box office with one user commenting: “David F. Sanberg deserves better. I want to see him return to horror.” Another tagged the director’s account and said: “/u/dauid, we’re rooting for you!” . I understand that’s a positive comment, but still haha.”

It was at this point that Sanberg responded, saying, “Don’t worry. I saw where this was going a long time ago. I’ll be fine though. They paid me all the money up front.”

So, he didn’t seem too surprised by the box office numbers. I assume there were a lot of things behind the scenes that prepared him for this.

The first movie was so good! So why didn’t the audience and fans come to support him? I admit, I haven’t seen it yet! Warner Bros. didn’t invite me to the media screening and I didn’t have time over the weekend to watch it. I’ll see it eventually, but I’m in no rush.

With all the big changes that have happened recently at Warner Bros. involving James Gunn and Peter Safran at the head of DC Studios and because they are taking things in a whole new and different direction, maybe people just aren’t interested in these characters that they were developed under the old regime. Maybe the lackluster reviews are turning people away? It could be any number of things, but it’s safe to say this sequel wasn’t a hit.

So what does this mean for a third Shazam! movie? Sandberg was recently asked about the possibility of this, and he responded by saying, “Definitely won’t do it if people don’t go see the film. What I’ve been told is that there is nothing in the Shazam films that contradicts DC’s future plans. So there’s the possibility of more Shazam and if that’s what you want, the best thing is to go see the movie.”

Well, regardless of Zechariah LeviIt is to be said that the sequel is better than the first film, it seems people have been talking. It’s hard to imagine WB and DC moving forward with a third film with numbers that let them down.

Have you seen Fury of the Gods? If yes, what do you think? If not, why didn’t you decide to watch it?
