The 1997 movie Gattaca it was one of those little indie sci-fi movies that blew my mind when I first saw it. That movie was such a good movie, and after all these years, we’re getting a series of sequels Homeland creators and producers Howard Gordon AND Alex Gansa.
The original film is set in a future where genetic engineering has become the norm and people’s potential is determined by their DNA. The story follows Vincent (Ethan Hawke), a genetically inferior “invalid” who dreams of space travel but is relegated to menial jobs due to his genetic makeup. To achieve his goals, Vincent assumes the identity of a genetically superior “valid” named Jerome (Judah Law), who becomes his accomplice. Vincent eventually gets a job at Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, but his cover is jeopardized when the mission director is assassinated and investigators gather genetic evidence from the scene.
The new series will take place a generation after the events of the film, “when science and mankind have evolved to the point where we can direct our own evolution. Genetic engineering created a world where parents can determine their children’s future before they are born (the Valids), which by default created a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or the color of one’s skin ( the Invalids).”
I’m really excited about this series! It looks like this story is going to dive into fascinating territory. I liked how Homeland played, it was an intelligent and well-written series, so there’s a good chance that this Gattaca the show will be solid.
The series was written by Gordon, Gansa and Craig Bortenand will also executive produce the series alongside Glenn Gellar, who runs the SPT-based company, as well as Danny DeVitowho produced the 1997 film written and directed by Andrea Niccolo.
